The Economy Government Role in the Economy The Moroccan government has reduced its role in the economy over the last decade. In particular, it ceased direct credit and foreign exchange allocation, reduced trade barriers, restrained government spending, lowered taxes and embarked on a privatization program. Balance of Payments Morocco runs a chronic merchandise trade deficit which is generally offset by receipts from tourism, workers remittances and foreign investment. A recent widening of the merchandise trade deficit and falling receipts from tourism, workers remittances and foreign investment have begun to put pressure on Morocco's foreign exchange reserves.
